BLCPS formed to ensure artistes’ rights
Lyricists, composers and performers of Bangladesh have launched a platform named Bangladesh Lyricists, Composer and Performers Society (BLCPS) to ensure the copyright and due royalties of their creations. In a press conference held on August 25, 2014 at National Press Club, members of BLCPS informed about the platform, its intention and work schedules.
Seasoned singer Sabina Yasmin, president of BLCPS, Sujit Mostafa, chief executive of BLCPS, Hamim Ahmed, general executive of BLCPS, Ayub Bachchu, Fuad Naser Babu, Maqsoodul Haque, Shuvro Dev and other eminent musicians were present at the press conference.
BLCPS will work as a copyright society which is registered with the Copyright Office under the Cultural Affairs Ministry. It will work according to the format and convention of CISAC (International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers). BIPF aided the formation of the society in the area of legal aspects.

A two-day National Workshop on Copyright, Creativity and Development was held on March 3, 2015 to raise awareness about copyright registrations and protection of related rights among relevant stakeholders.
Dr. Ranajit Kumar Biswas, Secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry, inaugurated the workshop at National Theatre seminar room of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The workshop was jointly organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh, the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
M Nabirul Islam, Registrar of Bangladesh Copyright Office moderated the event. Yoshito Nakajima, Deputy Director of Japan Copyright Office International Division and Yui Ema, Associate Officer of WIPO also attended and addressed the stakeholders at the event.
M Manzur Rahman, Joint Secretary of Cultural Affairs Ministry, presented a paper on ‘Recent Growth and Development of International Legal Framework of Copyright and Related Rights in Bangladesh’ in the workshop while copyright expert from Bangkok Nic Garnett held discussions on ‘Overview of Copyright and Related Rights: Concepts and Principles.’
The two-day long workshop was attended by eminent members of literary and creative field.
VIP Camp 2015
In a celebration of World Intellectual Property Day, BIPF initiated VIP camp 2015 on April 25, 2015 at Mujaffor Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium in the University of Dhaka. Students from different universities participated in this camp. Vice Secretary Mosarof Hossain, Register of Copyright Office Bangladesh, Nobirul Islam, Editor of Unmad magazine and renowned cartoonist Ahsan Habib addressed the camp. US Department of Justice Office Legal Adviser Thomas Doharti, CEO of BIPF Hamidul Mishbah, Enterprenure Minhaj Anwar, Musician Hamim Ahmed, Photographer Amirul Rajiv and Daffordil University Law teacher Abdullah Arif also spoke at the event.

IP seminar with DU pupils
To sensitize the students about the effective implementation and protection of Intellectual Property Laws, Bangladesh Copyright and Industrial Property Forum (BIPF) and University of Dhaka jointly organized an interactive session entitled “Intellectual Property Law: Perspective Bangladesh” on January 7, 2012 at the Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka.
The session was participated by students and faculty members from University of Dhaka and representatives from concerned organizations and government ministries. Dr. Rafiqullah Khan, Professor, Department of Bengali, University of Dhaka; Sharifa Khan, Director, WTO Cell, Ministry of Commerce; Kazi Zahin Hasan, Chairman, Bangladesh Copyright and Industrial Property Forum; A B M Hamidul Mishbah, Founder; and Tamanna Faiz, In-Charge, Public Relations and Communications from BIPF attended the session.
Speakers at the session stressed on complete implementation of intellectual property for the sake of foreign investment in Bangladesh and protection of individual creativity. Sharifa Khan, Director, WTO Cell, Ministry of Commerce said, “It is high time for Bangladesh to have a fully instrumental Intellectual Property Law.”

Commenting on the need of awareness among the law students, she opined, “Bangladesh has ratified different international trade agreements of which intellectual and industrial provisions are a significant part, and to get a better understanding of these provision- students need to be aware of the Intellectual and Industrial Property Laws both at home and abroad.” Throughout the session students interacted with the experts and expressed their opinions on issues regarding implementation and applicability of Intellectual Property Law in Bangladesh. Barrister Mishbah said, “Through interactive seminar like this we get to know about the perceptions of the young and student community that have raised crucial issues regarding the successful implementation of Intellectual Property Law in Bangladesh.” Lecturer Arif Zamil from the Law Department moderated the session. Filmmakers, producers for new censorship law to stop copyright piracy
Film producers and directors have urged the government to enact a new censorship law to stop copyright piracy. They made the call at a seminar titled “Protection of the Interest of Film and Copyright Law”, held at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) on Thursday, 26 January, 2012.
BFDC and Bangladesh Copyright Office organized the seminar in collaboration with Bangladesh Copyright and Industrial Property Forum.
While reading out the keynote paper, Registrar of Copyright Office, Manzurur Rahman said, “Foreign films are being screened through cable networks without copyright. The practice severely destroys the growth of domestic film industry in Bangladesh.” He also urged to establish modern and well-equipped theaters and initiate more mobile-court functions to strangle rampant piracy.
BFDC Managing Director, M Hamid in his speech as chief guest underscored the need for sensitizing people against film piracy and called for launching a social movement to combat this vice. He said, “The film industry of Bangladesh is near to extinct and the people related with the industry are suffering because of the piracy.”
Members of Bangladesh Producer Distributor Association, Bangladesh Film Directors Association, Bangladesh Film Artists Association, Cable Operator of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Film Censor Board, BFDC and representatives from Ministry of Information and Communication Technology attended the seminar.
